Having Courage on the Buddhist Path

We need courage in the pursuit of Enlightenment; however, courage is rarely mentioned, if ever, in the Buddhist suttas. In the Pali Canon, you can find many occasions where the Buddha praises the virtues of practicing diligence. He always encourages us to maintain a consistent meditation practice and diligently watch our mind. But what about how our heart is meant to combat the unsettling emotions of fear and uncertainty that can arise when we practice? Diligence might bring us to our meditation cushion, but it’s courage that will birth an inner strength that allows us to fearlessly face our “inner demons” of difficult emotions when they inevitably appear in our practice.
